RAVEN MOVED AROUND with the grace of a big cat, lithe lines and coiled muscles. But there was something there, a hint of danger Zach recognized all too well. She froze, her body straightening as she spoke on the phone. He tilted his head, studying her closely. Someone or something had triggered that thinly veiled deadly air she carried most of the time. Who had called her on a Sunday? More to the point, why? Was she going to get called into work?

The sharp jab of Deacon’s elbow to his ribs pulled Zach from his musings as he watched Raven through the clear glass doors. “You know she ain’t going to run out the other door, man.”

Zach glanced at him, irritated at the interruption to his thoughts. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“He means you haven’t let her out of your sight since we got here.” Lori smiled up at him. “Every time she moves I can see you’re aware of it. She moves, you tense, your head turns, and you’re, um, well, you’re...”

“All but drooling, not to mention there’s a flare of lust in your eyes. Surprised you’re not walking around with a hard-on.” Deacon chuckled.

“So? She’s a great lady. Doesn’t mean a damn thing.”

“Yes, it does.” Lori sighed. “You’re in love with her. Even if you’re not ready to admit it, you are. I think she’s falling for you as well. Just don’t do something stupid like run. Even a SEAL needs someone.”

“Yeah, well, it wouldn’t work,” Zach muttered as they walked away. “I can’t be what she needs.”

“Yeah, so you keep telling yourself.” Pyke handed him a cold pop. “More like she’s not what you need, old boy.”

“Pyke, shut up. I think you’re wrong, Zach, you’re exactly what she needs. Now then, let’s eat before we all die of starvation.” He stepped away only to freeze and turn back to meet Zach’s eyes. “Don’t let what you hear or see affect your judgment, my friend, Raven’s one of the good ones. What’s behind her has made her the woman she is,” Deacon said.

“What the fuck does that mean?” Zach snapped as Raven stepped through the patio doors, a smile on her face and a carafe of coffee in her hands. He froze, the knot loosening in his gut as she smiled at him, the warmth in her eyes enough to distract him from the words of his buddies.
